Assia Djebar is an Algerian novelist, translator and filmmaker.  Her awards include The Prix Materlinck, Liberatur Prize, Neustadt-Literature Prize, Marguerite Yourcenar Prize and the Medal of Francophile Literature from the Academie Francaises. 

Assia Djebar now holds the Silver Chair in French and Francophone studies at New York University.  The author of more than 20 books of fiction, essays, and poetry, Assia Djebar continues to be a frequently mentioned short list candidate for the Nobel

Prize for Literature.  The New York Times calls her books a "complex, passionate and highly literary oeuvre that explores Algeria's current crisis in language and history."

In CHILDREN OF THE NEW WORLD, Djebar portrays the interlocking lives of women and men in an Algerian town plunged in the protracted anti-colonial struggle against France in the 1950s.  As the brutal civil strife in Iraq continues, CHILDREN OF THE NEW WORLD is particularly timely because it reveals a determined Arab insurgency against foreign occupation from the inside out.
