Performances
Over the past decade and in multiple countries and languages, Assia Djebar's fictional characters , historical testimonies, and autobiographical memories have inspired interpretations of a more personal nature in theatre, opera, dance, lyrical readings and radio skits:
France, 1995
In Paris 1995 Françoise Longeard staged La Femme Cosmonaute, inspired by the "coda" of Vaste est la prison. Assia Djebar's novel ends with an Algerian journalist Yasmina giving her life to save a Polish friend. The play traces the destiny of this mysterious Polish woman like others who have left Algeria , her life spared.

Tout près de nous, la tragédie algérienne harcèle nos consciences. Au-delà du bouleversant témoignage de Kasia, femme polonaise, au-delà de la mort tragique à Alger de son amie journaliste Yasmina, la Femme Cosmonaute évoque cette galaxie d'exil et de souffrance qu'aucun de nous ne peut ignorer. Elle réunit un puzzle original de témoignages d'hier et d'aujourd'hui, de Rosa Luxembourg à Assia Djebar, qui porte le chant universel de solidarité parmi la détresse des femmes et des hommes d'Algérie.

In Rome 2000, Assia Djebar wrote an opera libretto Filles d'Ismael dans le vent et la tempête inspired by parts of her 1991 novel Far from Medina (Loin de Medine).

In 2004 at the Dedica ceremony honoring Assia Djebar, in Italy, renowned actresses performed two of Djebar's Quartet novels: Laura Curino interpreted L'Amour, la fantasia and Licia Maglietta performed Vaste est la prison before Assia Djebar for the first time.

la romancière et cinéaste algérienne Assia Djebar est à l'honneur en Italie.
Dedica , ainsi s'appelle l'événement organisé par l'Associazione per la
prosa (Association pour la prose) et Thesis, est une manifestation
internationale annuelle sur une personnalité du monde de la culture et sur son
parcours artistique. Après les écrivains Amin Maalouf, Vassilis Vassilikos,
Antonio Tabucchi, Dacia Maraini, Claudio Magris (parmi les derniers) c'est donc
le tour d'Assia Djebar qui recevra une série d'hommages dont l'attribution du
Sigillo, la médaille de la ville de Pordenone.
La romancière algérienne s'est imposée comme une de grandes plumes de la
littérature internationale en abordant les thèmes de l'identité, de la condition
de la femme dans l'Islam, du fanatisme religieux, du rôle de l'intellectuel dans
la société.

autobiografia scritta nella lingua del nemico, lingua amata, tuttavia. Questo è
Assia Djebar di "L'amore, la guerra".
Difficile comprendere come possa
riuscire a convivere tanto rancore e tanto amore insieme.
Il mio
stereotipo della lingua francese evoca canzoni d'amore, seduzioni galanti e
ancora: vibranti accenti di rivolta rivoluzionaria tutt'al più qualche nota
ridondante di orgoglio di sé… mai violenza e ferocia.
Per Assia il francese è tomba del suo
popolo, è parola gridata, tortura, violenza, oppressione.
Lingua matrigna. Che è stato… suo padre,
maestro elementare alla scuola francese, a regalarle! Quell'uomo col fez, alto e
diritto nel suo bel vestito all'europea, ha accompagnato a scuola la sua piccola
bambina, solo lei, fra tutte le figlie. Solo lei fra tutte le bambine del suo
harem, in un villaggio del Satiel algerina.
Imparare a scrivere è trovare una voce
che vola, oltre i veli, oltre il patio, oltre le terrazze, oltre il silenzio
dove le donne stanno rinchiuse.
È trovare un luogo dove rendere
giustizia e raccontare quello che nella lingua berbera (che non conosce
scrittura) soprattutto loro hanno vissuto e sofferto.
È una autobiografia fatta di vite
altrui, che altrimenti non avrebbero canto. È un disegno fiammante di storie che
si fanno magnifico glorioso arabesco senza canto. Io proverò a dargli voce con i
suoni ritrovati da Roberto Tarasco".

In the United States , Karen McLaughlin has created two different kinds of performances inspired by Djebar's texts. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana Karen developed a play from Assia Djebar's Women of Algiers in Their Apartment. Then from Algerian White she created the one-man show "The Language of the Dead" which continues to receive rave reviews today.

The performance adapts the first chapter, " The Language of the Dead," from Assia Djebar's ALGERIAN WHITE . Djebar's testament is a powerful lament against the assassinations of three beloved colleagues and friends murdered by Algerian fundamentalists. She dedicates her book to her "dear disappeared": Mahfoud Boucebci, a psychiatrist; M'Hamed Boukhobza, a sociologist; and Abdelkader Alloula, a dramatist. Djebar recalls those Algerian writers and intellectuals whose lives were cut short since the 1956 struggle for independence. She refuses their final silence as she conjoins them writing Algeria into life.
The performance is a twilight piece, a moving account on exile, memory and loss, summoning the dead to bear witness. Djebar exhumes the fallen lost to a nation at war with itself; her disruptive retelling and listening-in on history revolutionize how we understand what a nation remembers and what it forgets
